Highlights and
History
The Broadalbin-Perth golf program began in 1987,
when the Broadalbin and Perth school districts merged. Perth Physical Education
teacher Chuck Cirillo, golf coach at Broadalbin, took over the program and
guided the team as they competed in the Tri-Valley League. Golf was a Spring
sport in the Tri-Valley; therefore, BP was not able to compete as a team in the
Fall sectionals. However, the team was dominant in the TVL, posting 5
consecutive undefeated seasons and 8 league titles, and included such
outstanding players as Rick Cheney, Tim Munn, Wendell Richards, and LJ Dalmata,
who played at Bridgewater College.
When Coach Cirillo retired, BP Athletic Director Roger Gifford took over. Coach Gifford
oversaw the transition from the Tri-Valley League to the Foothills Council in
1998. BP went from the largest school in the TVL to the smallest school in the
Foothills. Coach Gifford's late 90's team featured BP Hall of Famer Brad
Lusenhop ('98), who moved on to play for Florida State.
Coach Gifford retired in 1999, and Eric Sengenberger moved from the boys' soccer program to become coach. BP has been a member of the Foothills since 1998, except for a single season as a member of the Colonial Council. Led by future college golfers Luigi Lanzi ('02) and Brandon Bush ('08), BP won the Section II Class B title in 2002 and 2008. In 2011, the Patriots won their 3rd Class B title, with
ABCD Qualifiers Jacob Rounds and Cody Husek leading the way. In 2014, Brett Getman set a school record with a round of 3-under par, and Alex Bond became the first BP golfer to earn medalist honors at the Foothills Council Tournament.
The 2015 team won the Foothills Council Southern Division, and claimed their 4th Sectional title as Alex Bond repeated as Foothills Tournament, tying the BP record with a 3-under back nine.
